Knowing the Past, Creating the Future

Knowing the Past, Creating the Future

"Those who do not know the past
cannot understand the present
and cannot create the future."

Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl

When I heard this quote recently, former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl's words stopped me in my tracks. They so clearly express why history matters. And why I feel such urgency about preserving the personal stories of the Berlin Airlift.

I grew up in West Berlin during the Cold War. The Airlift was always part of the city's memory, but I never learned about it growing up.

That changed as I began researching and writing Wings of Freedom. After the book was published, people started sharing their own stories with me. Some had watched the airplanes as children. Some had flown the missions, maintained the aircraft, tracked the weather, unloaded supplies, or supported the operation on the ground. Others carried the memories of parents and grandparents who had lived through it.

I realized that the history of the Berlin Airlift is still alive, held in the memories and voices of people who had experienced it. I also realized how quickly those voices will be lost.

That is how Voices of the Berlin Airlift began.

Many books have been written about the Berlin Airlift. They document the aircraft, statistics, military strategy, and leadership behind the Airlift. With Voices of the Berlin Airlift, I want to capture the human side. What did it feel like to hear airplanes overhead day and night? To wonder whether enough coal or food would arrive? To fly through fog and exhaustion, land, unload, and take off again? What did this extraordinary effort mean to the children who watched it happen, and how did it shape the lives of those who took part?

These stories allow us to encounter history not as a list of dates, but as human experience.

The Berlin Airlift was more than one of the twentieth century's greatest logistical achievements. It demonstrated what can happen when communication, cooperation, compassion, and determination are placed in the service of humankind. Former enemies worked together. Young airmen risked their lives for people they had never met. A city under pressure and the Allied occupation forces chose not to surrender its freedom.

That is our big 'WHY.'

Wings of Freedom exists not simply to preserve what happened, but to preserve what it means.

Freedom and democracy are not self-sustaining.

Cooperation does not happen automatically.

We must defend human dignity, and we must understand and carry forward the values that made the Airlift possible.

The Airlift didn't just carry coals, it carried values. - Andrew Steiman

I witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. I know what it feels like to see the course of history change right in front of my eyes. I also know that such moments do not appear from nowhere. They are connected to choices made years earlier, to courage shown by people, and to values people refused to abandon.

Helmut Kohl's words connect all of this for me. If we do not know the past, we cannot fully understand the world we have inherited. And if we do not understand the present, how can we purposefully create a better future?

The generation with living memories of the Airlift is growing smaller. The time to listen is now.

Stories preserve memories. Values preserve the future.

If you believe these stories are worth remembering, please consider supporting Wings of Freedom with a donation. Your support helps us listen to the voices of those who lived the Berlin Airlift, preserve their memories, and make sure their stories continue to reach future generations.

Together, we can keep these memories alive, honor the people behind them, and carry the lessons of the Airlift forward.
